Virtual microprocessors are software-based analogical models of computing hardware. To create them requires programming highly complex integrated circuits known as VLSIs (Very Large Scale Integration) to be cellular neural networks (CNNs). CNNs are electronic mini organism-like cells that can re-apply memorised information and modify their own operation accordingly without external reprogramming. The inventors of the CNN universal machine and supercomputer chip provide a concise analysis of the topic. Opening with a foreword by the respected academic, Professor Leon Chua, the book progresses to explore circuit design, prototyping and analogical algorithms. Subjects covered include the VLSI design and implementation of CNNs, the testing of CNN chips and a detailed analysis of a system for prototyping and interfacing the CNN universal chips.
