Excerpt from The Study of Hebrew, Its Past and Future: An Inaugural Lecture On Monday evening, July 28th, Professor Landau delivered his inaugural lecture before a large and appreciative audience. The Chair was taken by the Principal, Professor J. H. Hofmeyr, who, in his introductory remarks, heartily welcomed Professor Landau to the professorial staff of the institution. No university institution, he said, was worthy of the name which did not make provision for the study of Hebrew. Greece and Palestine were the two countries which had done most for the development of the human race. While the Council had hesitated about the creation of the new department, it had had no hesitation in regard to the man who should be appointed. In Dr. Landau they had a professor of great distinction, known not only in South Africa, but also in Europe and America. In the first instance the appointment was a temporary one, and its permanency would depend on the measure of support secured in respect both of finance and the number of students that would be forthcoming.
