Pöggeler begreift die Lyrik Paul Celans als die Fortführung des künstlerischen Gedankens von Baudelaire und Mallarmé, trotz aller Unterschiede im Verständnis von Modernität bei Celan einerseits, bei Baudelaire und (in dessen kritischer Nachfolge) bei Hofmannsthal andererseits. Er untersucht die Einflüsse Walter Benjamins und der Forschungen Gershom Scholems zur jüdischen Mystik auf Celan. Er zeigt, dass weder die Hermeneutik Gadamers noch Adornos Kritische Theorie Celans Lyrik zureichend zu erfassen vermochten und dass Celan eine der Heideggerschen Auffassung von Kunst konträre Position einnimmt.
