Die Maler Franz Marc und Wassily Kandinsky gründeten nach einem Krach mit der »Neuen Künstler Vereinigung« den »Blauen Reiter«, eine Vereinigung, die keine feste Richtung vorgab, sondern versuchte, verschiedene Kunstrichtungen zu bündeln. Mit August Macke, Gabriele Münter, Paul Klee und anderen erfuhr der Blaue Reiter große Unterstützung. Schon früh fand die erste erfolgreiche Ausstellung statt. Auf der zweiten Ausstellung wurden neben den Bildern von Kandinsky und Marc Werke von Hans Arp, Georges Braque und Pablo Picasso und den Künstlern der »Brücke« gezeigt. 1912 wurde der Almanach mit dem Titel 'Der blaue Reiter' veröffentlicht.
