Excerpt from Observations on Railways, Particularly on the Proposed London and Birmingham Railway Two bars, each about fifteen feet long, are laid parallel, nearly five feet apart, and thus placed they form what is called a line of road: They are from two to three inches in width, and are supported, at intervals of about three feet, upon blocks of stone, or sleepers of wood these are afterwards covered with earth, gravel, &c. So that the rail stands about two inches above the ground.
