Erstmals seit Hugo Riemann liegt mit dem Buch Musik und Rhythmus von Peter Petersen eine von Grund auf neue Rhythmustheorie vor: die "Komponententheorie". Sie dürfte Musikwissenschaftler und -theoretiker ebenso interessieren wie ausübende Künstler. Die Thesen und Analysen Petersens ermöglichen es, die rhythmische Gestalt von Musik besser als bisher zu beschreiben und zu verstehen. Hat man die Rhythmik bislang einfach als ein Wechselspiel von Kürzen und Längen mit Akzenten und Metren beschrieben, so zeigt Petersen auf, dass es außer den Basisrhythmen sekundäre Rhythmen gibt, die nicht notiert sind, weil sie von Klangeigenschaften und Klanggestalten abhängen. Diese "Komponentenrhythmen" sind als rhythmisches Gewebe wirksam und zudem schwerkraftbildend; sie können sogar Metrum und Takt verändern.
