This book provides dialogue, research and theorising around mathematics and the transition to primary/elementary school. It has a particular focus on theorising transition to school and the mathematics young children encounter at this critical time in their education. The book celebrates the diversity of mathematics learners during transitions to school, discusses the mathematics young children bring to the first year of school, examines the continuity of mathematics curriculum and/or pedagogy as children begin school and interrogates the ideas of informal mathematics and formal mathematics? In each chapter, authors reflect on their work in the area of mathematics and transition to school, places that work within the overall context of research in these fields, predicts the trajectory of this work in the future and considers the implications of the work both theoretically and practically.
