Miss Dale's achievement lies first in instructing the reader's ear to respond to a purely quantitative rhythm, then in identifying the characteristic rhythms of Greek lyric and the laws which control them - all without losing sight of the poetry. This book was first published in 1948, and Miss Dale completed her work on the 1968 second edition before her death. In it she has corrected what she calls 'the errors and shortcomings' of the first, and has taken into account work published in the intervening years.
