Den schmalen Grat zwischen loyalem und subversivem Verhalten gegenüber dem Shogunat während der Edo-Zeit (1603-1868) illustriert das Leben des Gelehrten Yamagata Daini. §Die Ambivalenz seiner Argumentation hat die meisten Leser dazu verleitet, seinen Gedanken entweder eine Vorreiterrolle für die Meiji-Restauration einzuräumen oder ihn als humanistischen Pionier einer egalitären Gesellschaftsordnung zu würdigen. Beide Thesen widerlegt die vorliegende Studie mittels einer Interpretation der annotierten Übersetzung von Dainis Schrift Ryushi shinron. Yamagata Daini wird als Repräsentant eines kritischen Loyalismus gedeutet, der dem Tokugawa-Haus mit Sympathie begegnete.
