Recently, Australian governments have expressed concern regarding the unacceptably high levels of social disadvantage that continue to impact upon the lives of this Indigenous Australians. In response the Australian Government established a coalition with state and territory governments to develop and implement strategies to close the disadvantage gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians in key areas such as health, education, housing and employment, etc. This book is the outcome of research that enabled Indigenous Australians to identify issues they considered impacted upon their capacity to engage in their own education within the academe and to explore the degree of compatibility between what they, as Indigenous peoples, wanted from their university education and what Australian universities and the Commonwealth Government expected of them. It clearly reveals why education has not delivered on its promise to Australia s First Peoples. In privileging Indigenous viewpoints, this book provides vital and enlightening insights for all who engage with Australia s First Peoples whether at work, at play or simply in the everyday interactions of their lives.
