Harmonic maps are solutions to a natural geometric variational problem. This notion was motivated by some fundamental ideas from differential geometry, in particular geodesics, minimal surfaces, and harmonic functions.§Harmonic maps are also closely related to nonlinear partial differential equations, to holomorphic maps in several complex variables, to the theory of stochastic processes, to the nonlinear field theory in theoretical physics, and to the theory of liquid crystals in materials science.§The current book, though by no means a complete description of the theory, will provide an introduction to the theory and an approach to the subject that will be useful to researchers and graduate students in differential geometry, geometric analysis, differential equations and theoretical physics.
