Am Beispiel eines nationalen Entwicklungsprojekts in der Südwest-Provinz wird gezeigt, welche Auswirkungen Modernisierungs- massnahmen auf die soziale und ökonomische Lage von Frauen in der ländlichen Gesellschaft Kameruns haben. Der theoretische Ansatz erläutert, wie die im Subsistenzsektor verausgabte Frauenarbeit im sogenannten peripheren Kapitalismus durch die Zwänge des Weltmarktes unter die Kapitalakkumulation «subsumiert» wird. Die Folgen dieses Prozesses für die «Lebenswirklichkeit» der Frauen und die Nachteile, die ihnen individuell und kollektiv - verglichen mit ihrer Position in autochthonen Gesellschaftstypen - entstehen, werden dargestellt und auf ihre Handlungsmöglichkeiten im Rahmen des kamerunischen Nationalstaats bezogen.
