Die Studie beschäftigt sich mit der sozialwissenschaftlichen Befragung als Kommunikationssituation. Dabei werden die Antworten der Befragten nicht naiv als gültige Auskünfte vorausgesetzt, sondern im Kontext der Interviewsituation eingeordnet. Der Autor erklärt mit sozialpsychologischen Theorien, wie sich Interviewer und Befragte wechselseitig wahrnehmen. Das Antwortverhalten des Befragten ist als Möglichkeit zu verstehen, einen guten Eindruck beim Interviewer zu hinterlassen. Dies gilt vor allem, wenn der Befragte die Fragen als bedrohlich einschätzt. Im empirischen Teil wird die Theorie anhand des Beispiels der Fragen zur politischen Einstellung und zur Wahlpräverenz überprüft.
