The Dictionary has been planned as a many-volumed project, with each volume on a self-contained basis. The time span covers the period of modern industrialization from the closing decades of the eighteenth century to the present. Living persons are excluded. Entries include all persons active in the organization and institutions of the British labour movement as well as those who influenced the development of radical and socialist ideas. Biographical sources, including writings, are attached to individual entries; and each volume includes a consolidated list of names already published to date, and a comprehensive subject index. Each volume includes personalities from the 1790s to modern times. The tenth volume ranges through the whole period of the modern labour movement and it includes some well-known activists from the Chartist years, including G. J. Harney, and H. M. Hyndman and Belfort Bax as well as the authors of the Red Flag and The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists (Jim Connell and Robert Noonan respectively). The Special Notes, which were begun in volume V and have become a regular feature of succeeding volumes, provide detailed accounts of organizations and events which have been somewhat neglected in the general literature. Past Notes have included the 1917 Club, the League Against Imperialism, the Guild of St Matthew and the Church Socialist League, the Labour Party Delegation to Russia in 1920 and the British Trade Union Delegation to Russia in 1924. This present volume has a Special Note on the Churches of Christ as a Labour sect, and additional notes to the entries on Jim Connell and Wal Hannington.
