Die Arbeit stellt die These auf, dass in der Sprache zwei Strategien zur Herstellung von Referenz anzutreffen sind, die von einer Sprache zur anderen in unterschiedlicher Ausgeprägtheit verankert sind: Deixis und Anaphorik. Mit Hilfe einer kontrastiven Analyse zweier phylogenetisch weit voneinander entfernter Sprachsysteme, des Deutschen und des Japanischen,wird gezeigt, dass die genannten Referenzstrategien die Grammatik einer Sprache weitgehend determinieren. Dies wird auf allen relevanten linguistischen Ebenen, nämlich in Text, Satz und Wort, nachgewiesen.
