Chrysophyceen treten sowohl im Süß- wie auch im Brack- und Meerwasser auf. Hauptsächlich sind es kleine, einzellige, morphologisch stark differenzierte Algen, die nur im lebenden Zustand oder mit Hilfe des Elektronenmikroskops sicher bestimmt werden können.Die Systematik der Chrysophyceen ist im wesentlichen künstlich. Sie folgt in diesem Band mit nur wenigen Abänderungen der Bearbeitung BOURELLYS (1968). Aus den Chrysophyceen wurde aber auf Grund neuerer Erkenntnisse die Klasse der Haptophyceen ausgegliedert, welche nahezu völlig Bourellys Unterklasse Isochrysophycidae entspricht.Da die ,,Süßwasserflora" vor allem als Bestimmungsbuch dienen soll, wurde das Hauptgewicht auf die Beschreibung und bildliche Darstellung der Arten gelegt. Für die Familie Synuraceae wurden auch schematische, auf elektronenmikroskopischen Aufnahmen basierende Zeichnungen beigefügt.In die vorliegende Bearbeitung wurde auch die Unterklasse Craspedomonadophycidae (Choanoflagellata) aufgenommen, die heute, trotz einiger Ähnlichkeiten mit den Chrysophyceen, eher als Zooflagellaten betrachtet werden. Diese Gruppe umfaßt jedoch viele in verunreinigten Gewässern auftretende Arten, weshalb ihre Bestimmung von praktischer Bedeutung für die biologische Analyse des Wassers ist.
