This work is a free adaptation of the medieval legend initially conveyed to us through a chanson de geste (a narrative poem originally intended to be sung while accompanied by a musical instrument) composed by the minstrel Adenes Le Roi. Bertha’s story belongs to the cycle of Charlemagne, the crowning jewel of which is the Song of Roland. According to this tale, Bertha Broadfoot, the future mother of Charlemagne, who had just married French King Pepin the Short, was banished from the royal court due to the treachery of a servant who took her place. Having found refuge with a family of modest means in the Le Mans forest, Bertha led a humble and discreet existence. Nonetheless, various events put King Pepin on her trail. The author assumed a fictional medieval narrator’s voice to relate this story, sprinkling it here and there with pieces in verse inspired by medieval poetry, in order to pay tribute to the legend’s lyrical origins.
