Der Band enthält zwei Schriften Shaftesburys zur Moralphilosophie, Theologie und Zeitgeschichte. Shaftesbury hat zwölf Predigten von Benjamin Whichcote (1609-1683), einem führenden Vertreter der Cambridge Platonists, ediert, redigiert und 1698 veröffentlicht. Das Vorwort zu dieser Ausgabe ist seine erste Veröffentlichung und behandelt bereits wesentliche Themen des Gesamtwerks in der für Shaftesbury typischen kritischen Hal-tung und "socratick irony". Den Predigten werden als Erstveröffentlichung alle verfügbaren handschriftlichen und redaktionellen Anmerkungen Shaftesburys beigegeben. Die Einleitung informiert über die Textgeschichte. - Die Briefsammlung Several Letters Written by a Noble Lord to a Young Man at the University wurde 1716 zum ersten Mal gedruckt. Eine Abschrift der Originalbriefe (Houghton Library) ergänzt den Bestand der unvollständig erhaltenen Autographen (Public Record Office, London) und zeigt, daß die Umarbeitung der ursprünglich persönlichen Briefe an Shaftesburys Protégé Michael Ainsworth zu der posthumen, selbständigen Schrift auf Shaftesburys Initiative zurückgeht. Eine kürzlich aufgetauchte vollständige Abschrift aus dem Jahr 1763 bietet zudem biographische und sachliche Kommentare. Die Briefe werden erstmals nach den Autographen und Abschriften vollständig veröffentlicht, der Druckfassung gegenübergestellt und ausführlich kommentiert.
