In Virginia Woolfs künstlerischem Schaffen waren die Jahre 1925 bis 1930 eine besonders produktive Zeit. Mrs Dalloway, von ihr selbst einmal als der gelungenste ihrer Romane bezeichnet, und der erste Band der Essaysammlung Der gewöhnliche Leser kamen 1925 heraus, von der Presse viel beachtet und gelobt. Im folgenden Jahr nahm der Roman Zum Leuchtturm Gestalt an; er erschien 1927. Auch der erste Entwurf zu Die Wellen fällt in diese Zeit. Sie könne "gar nicht schnell genug kritzeln, um alles an die Oberfläche zu bringen", notierte Virginia Woolf im Tagebuch. Tatsächlich schrieb sie Orlando, ihre Huldigung an Vita Sackville-West, innerhalb eines halben Jahres, von Oktober 1927 bis März 1928. Im Februar 1930 schließlich erschien ihr berühmter großer Essay Ein Zimmer für sich allein.§Die fünfbändige Edition der Tagebücher, "das letzte bedeutende Werk Virginia Woolfs, das der Öffentlichkeit übergeben wird" (Quentin Bell), ist nicht nur die wichtigste Quelle für die Erforschung von Leben und Werk. Dieses Dokument ihres inneren und äußeren Daseins offenbart zwischen Alltagsbanalitäten und dem so sehr geliebten Familien- und Gesellschaftsklatsch einen ganz eigenen poetischen Chrarakter.
